Francis Barber Pupil Referral Unit has a vacancy for a Subject Leader for English and Literacy to fulfil this role for a maternity cover. This role will suit an aspiring or experienced English Subject Leader who is looking for an exciting opportunity to lead the whole school in a core subject in this Outstanding Alternative Provision.
The school is seeking a well-qualified, committed and passionate Subject Leader, in this school for 11 –16 year olds in South London. You will need to be committed to supporting young people to rebuild their self-esteem and resilience, through leading an inspiring curriculum that provides opportunities to gain AQA GCSE and Functional Skills, English qualifications. Start date is as soon as possible.
Francis Barber is a large, friendly and inclusive PRU that prides itself on helping the young people it works with to achieve their full potential. It is also a complex PRU, catering for a number of specific groups of young people. These include: pupils who have been permanently excluded, those who are dual registered, pupils who have recently moved into the area, and some who have not regularly attended school in the past.
At Francis Barber, the English and Literacy curriculum is tailored to meeting specific learning needs. Students in Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils take part in a reading programme which aims to re-engage pupils with reading whole books and to improve their basic literacy skills. The programme includes Faster Read reading sessions, Rapid Reading support, author visits and a reading rewards programme. In Year 11 pupils are stretched and challenged, through a bespoke curriculum, to achieve excellent outcomes in GCSE and Functional skills Level1 and 2 exams. The English and Literacy Subject Leader will be able to teach high quality and engaging lessons to small groups of pupils. They will lead a team committed to raising the achievement of all our pupils and helping the Year 11 students to gain good results in the GCSE and Functional Skills exams. The successful candidate will have a good understanding of how to help pupils raise their basic literacy skills and in conjunction with the SLT team be able to plan appropriate individualised programmes for additional support.
