POSITION:
Special Education Paraprofessional
RESPONSIBLE TO:
Supervising Teacher, Building Principal and Special Education Director
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Provides support to a child with a disability in the classroom, other educational settings (e.g. playground, hall, restroom, gymnasium, other specified areas on a school campus and transportation situations) or in community-based educational settings. Assists teachers or other related service personnel in implementing the IEP.
Assists in the personal care of the child. Ensures safety of the child.
Provides necessary support because of physical, health or behavioral concerns to enable a child access to the educational program. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips. Assists with large group activities. Participates in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning. Provides escort and assistance to children as necessary.
Helps maintain individual records for each child. Assists teacher in maintaining neat work and study areas. Assists students with daily living skills. Assists students with transition activities. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
High School diploma or recognized equivalent. Completion of 48 semester hours of college coursework; or Associate’s degree or higher; or a passing score from the state based para-professional test. Completion of the Oklahoma Special Education Paraprofessional Training or other State approved LEA training and Oklahoma paraprofessional certification.
Completion and maintenance of training skills in CPR & First Aid. Completion of training in Universal Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens Training and each school year thereafter. Completion of an additional six hours of professional development each school year thereafter.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Regular attendance following a designated work schedule; must be able to work extended hours and additional days/evenings as required by position responsibilities; must be able to attend and participate in meetings and conferences scheduled.
Once all requirements have been met, candidates must work with the school district to complete the application packet and mail it to the Oklahoma State Department of Education-Special Education Services Department. The application packet must include:
- A copy of a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training card (front and back);
- A copy of a current First Aid Card (front and back);
- Certificate of completion of the Special Education Paraprofessional training;
- A job description;
- Daily work schedule outlining duties and responsibilities performed; and
- School site emergency procedures.
