Job Title: Deputy Manager - Children's Residential Home
Reports To: Registered Manager

Pay rate: £35,000 - £40,000
Purpose of the Role:
To support the Registered Manager in all aspects of the day-to-day operation and management of the children's home, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, therapeutic care in line with the home's Statement of Purpose, Ofsted regulations (Children's Homes Regulations 2015 and Quality Standards), and the organisation's ethos. The Deputy Manager will act as a positive role model and deputise for the Registered Manager in their absence.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Leadership and Management:

  • Deputise for the Registered Manager: Assume full responsibility for the home's operation in the absence of the Registered Manager, ensuring continuity of high-quality care and adherence to all policies and procedures.
  • Team Leadership & Supervision: Lead, motivate, supervise, and support a team of Residential Support Workers and Senior Residential Support Workers, fostering a positive and reflective team culture. Conduct regular supervisions and appraisals.
  • Rota Management: Plan and manage staff rotas to ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix to meet the needs of the children and young people.
  • Staff Development: Identify training and development needs for the staff team, facilitate access to appropriate training, and ensure compliance with mandatory training requirements. Support the induction of new staff.
  • Performance Management: Monitor staff performance, provide constructive feedback, and address any performance issues in collaboration with the Registered Manager.
  • Quality Assurance: Contribute to the continuous improvement of the service, ensuring the home meets and exceeds regulatory requirements and internal quality standards. Participate in quality assurance audits (e.g., Regulation 44 visits).

2. Child Care and Safeguarding:

  • Direct Work with Children: Actively engage with children and young people, building positive relationships, and acting as a consistent and reliable adult role model.
  • Care Planning & Review: Oversee the development, implementation, and review of comprehensive, child-centred care plans, placement plans, and risk assessments. Ensure these plans meet individual needs (education, health, social, emotional, psychological, cultural) and are regularly updated.
  • Safeguarding: Take a lead role in safeguarding children and young people, ensuring all staff understand and adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures. Promptly report and respond to any safeguarding concerns.
  • Behaviour Management: Implement and model therapeutic approaches and positive behaviour support strategies, de-escalating challenging situations calmly and effectively.
  • Health & Well-being: Ensure children's health, educational, and emotional needs are met, liaising with relevant professionals (e.g., GPs, CAMHS, schools). Administer and record medication as prescribed.

3. Compliance and Administration:

  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain expert knowledge of and ensure the home's compliance with the Children's Homes Regulations 2015, Quality Standards, Ofsted inspection framework, and other relevant legislation (e.g., Children Act 1989).
  • Record Keeping: Ensure accurate, detailed, and up-to-date recording of all relevant information, including daily logs, incident reports, care plans, and financial records.
  • Multi-Agency Working: Build and maintain effective working relationships with social workers, parents, families, education providers, health professionals, and other external agencies. Attend and contribute to LAC reviews, CIN meetings, and other professional meetings.
  • Health and Safety: Ensure the home environment is safe, clean, and well-maintained, adhering to health, safety, and fire regulations. Conduct regular risk assessments.
  • Financial Administration: Assist the Registered Manager with the day-to-day financial administration of the home, including managing petty cash and monitoring budgets.

4. On-Call and Flexibility:

  • Participate in an on-call rota to provide out-of-hours support and advice for the home.
  • Be flexible to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and sleep-ins, to meet the needs of the home and young people.
