About the job

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Mathematics starting September 1, 2026. The research area of interest is in applied mathematics with a preferred emphasis in Theoretical and Computational Statistics, Machine Learning, Data Science, and/or Mathematical Molecular Biology. We are particularly interested in candidates with research interests which promote synergy and collaboration with the current department and college faculty. Although we are primarily interested in hiring an applied mathematician with one of the above specializations, exceptional candidates from other areas are encouraged to apply. The mathematics department is part of the College of Science and Mathematics which encompasses six departments: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics, and includes interdisciplinary PhD programs providing a rich environment for research mentoring and collaboration. State-of-the-art research computing facilities, including several high-performance computing clusters, are available to UMass Boston researchers. Partnerships and collaborations with academic institutions and industry research laboratories in the Greater Boston area offer substantial opportunities for professional development. The successful candidate must possess a PhD degree in mathematics, statistics or related fields and must have a robust research program and strong potential to secure extramural funding. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to expand and strengthen the research within the department and college. All candidates must exhibit a clear commitment to advancing the university's teaching mission through their participation in on-going student success initiatives in the department and the university. The successful candidate will also have the capacity to contribute to broad departmental and college service. A teaching load reduction to root a strong research program will be provided. For more information about the department see https://www.umb.edu/science-mathematics/academic-departments/mathematics/. UMass Boston is an urban public research university with a teaching soul, whose impact is both local and global. We are the third most diverse university in the country - more than 60% of our undergraduate students come from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome. We invite applications from candidates who engage the diverse life experiences of our student body, who appreciate that students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and who recognize and articulate how their own life experiences and backgrounds have shaped their journeys, practices, and commitments as researchers, scholars, and educators. Application instructions: Please submit (i) a cover letter, and (ii) a curriculum vitae to (https://employmentopportunities.umb.edu/boston/en-us/listing/). Additionally, applicants are strongly encouraged to submit supplemental materials to MathJobs.org. These materials should consist of the following: (i) a cover letter; (ii) a curriculum vitae; (iii) a standard AMS cover sheet; (iv) a statement of current research, vision, and future research plans; (v) a description of teaching philosophy, experience, or future teaching plans. In addition, you should arrange for four (4) writers to submit letters of recommendation to MathJobs.org, with one of these letters address teaching. The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Please note that applications are considered incomplete (and will not be considered) unless the cover letter and curriculum vitae are submitted to (https://employmentopportunities.umb.edu/boston/en-us/listing/). For full consideration, applications should be received by November 5, 2025. For inquiries, email: math@umb.edu. UMass Boston is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, we will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations for the hiring process. If reasonable accommodation is needed, please contact HRDirect@umb.edu or 617-287-5150. The University of Massachusetts Boston provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, age, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, disability, military status, genetic information, pregnancy or a pregnancy-related condition, or membership in any other legally protected class.
