About the job

Outset Ventures is New Zealand’s largest science and engineering venture hub, community and early-stage investment fund.

Our team have founded, invested in and scaled New Zealand’s most ambitious deep technology companies including Rocket Lab, Mint Innovation, LanzaTech Ternary Kinetics, Daisy Lab, Dennisson Technologies, RespirAq, Open Star alongside many others as we continue our mission to incubate and invest in nation changing technologies.

Based in Future House on the city fringe of Auckland’s CDB, the Outset campus is a unique workplace, incubator and the spiritual home of New Zealand deep technology. Following expansive renovations, now spanning five floors and 6000 m2, our campus is the daily workplace for hundreds of entrepreneurial engineers, scientists and innovators.

With our second venture fund closed we are seeking a Community Manager to support our team and play a pivotal role in scaling our offerings for a growing community and portfolio.

About the Role

This is a multi-faceted role that ranges from keeping the coffee beans in plentiful supply, to owning Outset’s internal administrative systems, organising events and marketing so that our on-site and external community strengthen connectivity and founder led support networks.

We’re looking for someone who loves problem-solving, isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty, and can juggle long-term projects as well as short-term challenges with ease. You’ll be working with a small team in a complex and dynamic space, so a high ownership mentality and a desire to help wherever you can are key.

Here are some of the areas you’ll be accountable for:

  • Organise and maintain Outset’s internal administrative systems and IT providers (Airtable Notion, Hubspot and G-Suite, as examples)
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Outset site, such as managing office supplies, stationary and organising facilities maintenance
  • Support the property management aspect of running a 6000m2 campus that includes a busy community café, fifteen meeting rooms, and multiple community spaces
  • Support the internal and external marketing and communications to our stakeholders, writing community newsletters and content for external publication through HubSpot and social channels.
  • Onboard and offboard new people and resident companies on site and into the Outset community
  • Support the Outset team where needed, such as helping to organise and minute investment committee and board meetings.
  • Organise community events such as Outset’s monthly community meetups and educational workshops, and hosting international visitors and delegations
  • Provide administrative support to Outset’s Investment team and Investment Committee.
  • No task is too small if it makes the teams around you more effective!

Skills and Experience

This is a great opportunity for an all-rounder who is keen to be involved in the deep technology sector but has no issue with doing routine office chores like organising couriers, unpacking a dishwasher and coordinating meeting room bookings and hospitality.

Your background is less important than your skills, which should include as many of the following as possible:

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a positive attitude - people will want to come to you with their problems because you’ll know how to tackle them.
  • Not letting tasks or follow-ups slip through the cracks - you’ll be working in a dynamic and ever-changing environment but will ensure that priorities get done.
  • Social skills - you will be working closely with the Outset team, residents on-site, portfolio ventures, contractors, service providers, and suppliers
  • Project management skills - you’ll be relied upon for coordinating small construction projects, security audits, implementing new systems, etc.
  • An appreciation of how laboratories and workshops operate – we have both private and shared spaces for our start-ups that you will be involved with.

If the above sounds like you, apply below. We aim to quickly shortlist and interview candidates over the coming month for a start in late March/April 2025. This role can range from 20 hours per week to full-time and is based in Parnell, Auckland.

Please note that you must have the right to work in New Zealand to apply for this job. Regrettably, we will not be offering visa sponsorship for this role.
