Who we need
The AVP Financial Controller will be accountable to provide leadership and oversight in shaping the future of the accounting function for the company, including internal and external reporting, tax management, accounting policies for both IFRS and USGAAP, and internal controls. You will also be responsible for maximizing accounting efficiencies and procedures, establishing and enhancing reinsurance management function, as well as being the finance partner with the senior leadership team on corporate financial performance management, and you will also support corporate financial strategies and planning.
What you will do
- Act as a key contributor to the creation and execution of an overall change management model and artifacts to be used across new initiatives and integration for finance functions in response to business acquisition and integration of various business entities;
- Collaborate and coordinate with inter and intra company departments to drive key strategic initiatives;
- Be in charge of the financial closing process and statutory filing, financial statements and various formal financial reporting including Board presentations, parent company reports, management reporting, corporate KPIs and rating agencies;
- Manage and comply with federal and provincial government reporting requirement and tax filings, partner with parent company to enhance the efficiency of group tax planning;
- Lead in establishing new accounting operations process under new GL systems and comply with new IFRS accounting standards;
- Champion and facilitate transitioning of accounting duties from US to Canada including IFRS to USGAAP conversion, and consolidation of Securian Canada entities, as well as to provide finance support for the new business development;
- Lead and establish reinsurance center of excellence, manage the overall reinsurance programs to ensure reinsurance treaties are developed to mitigate organization’s financial risks as desired, and target operational efficiency of reinsurance administration is achieved;
- Coordinate with both external and internal audit other teams within the organization to ensure a compliant operation;
- Responsibly challenge the status quo to achieve a business culture dedicated to continuous improvement and best practice;
- Work to improve targeted inefficiencies, with a focus on utilizing technology where possible to drive our business forward;
- Keep abreast of industry trends, developments, and technology;
- Evaluate staff performance and improve daily operations to ensure corporate and departmental goals and commitments are met;
- Maintain critical stakeholder relationships to remain close to all relevant issues/needs/concerns;
- Regularly and consistently encourage and inspire an elevated level of team performance;
- Support projects and ad hoc requests as needed or assigned.
What you will bring
- The education. CPA designation, Master’s degree will be considered as an asset.
- The experience. 10+ years of accounting and finance experience in insurance industry. A minimum of 5 years of managerial experience in accounting or audit function, audit experiences in big 4 audit firms are preferred. Experience in USGAAP reporting would be an asset. Data sourcing, systems integration and project management experience.
- The knowledge and the skills. A thorough knowledge of IFRS. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated strong influence skills with ability to communicate and present effectively at all levels of the organization. Demonstrate team leadership skills, and be able to build, lead and develop a high performing finance team. Strong problem solving and creative skills, and the ability to exercise sound judgement to make decisions based on accurate and timely analysis. Advanced Excel skills, strong Microsoft Office skills, proficient in ERP SAP system, and other financial reporting tools.
