About the job

Who We Are

Nuro exists to better everyday life through robotics. Founded in 2016, Nuro has spent eight years developing autonomous driving (AD) technology and commercializing AD applications. The Nuro Driver™ is our world-class autonomous driving system that combines AD hardware with our generalized AI-first self-driving software. Built to learn and improve through data, the Nuro Driver™ is one of the few driverless autonomous technologies on public roads today.

Nuro has raised over $2B in capital from Fidelity, Bailie Gifford, T. Rowe Price, Google, and other leading investors. We’ve partnered with some of the world’s most respected brands including Uber, FedEx, Domino’s, Walmart, Kroger, and 7-Eleven.

About the Role

In this role, you will be a key contributor to the development and safety of Nuro Driver. You will focus on the sensing, compute hardware, localization, and perception modules, ensuring their robustness, reliability, and safety according to industry standards. You will work cross-functionally with hardware, software, operations, and product teams to define requirements, design system architectures, oversee integration, validate performance, and contribute significantly to the safety case. Your expertise will be crucial in delivering a safe and capable autonomous driving system.

About the Work

  • Lead system-level requirements definition (in Jama), architecture design, integration strategy, and validation for autonomy sensors (LiDAR, cameras, radar, IMU), localization and perception modules.
  • Drive system safety activities for autonomy sensors and compute based on ISO 26262 / ISO 21448, including conducting HARA, deriving safety requirements, and performing safety analyses (FMEA, FTA).
  • Collaborate closely with Sensor HW teams on sensor selection, characterization, integration, and defining safety methodologies and requirements.
  • Partner with Perception, Localization, Planning, and Controls software teams to define interfaces, performance metrics, failure modes, and validation strategies.
  • Support and maintain sections of the overall Autonomy Safety Case pertaining to sensors, localization, and perception, utilizing structures like GSN and focusing on residual risk assessment and clear argumentation.
  • Define and quantify test coverage requirements for simulation, HIL, and real-world testing environments to ensure system performance and safety against requirements.
  • Perform root cause analysis for complex cross-functional issues identified during integration and testing, driving them to resolution.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to cross-functional teams, potentially mentoring junior engineers.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in autonomous vehicle sensors, localization techniques, perception algorithms, and safety standards (ISO 26262, ISO 21448, ISO 8800).

About You

  • Strong understanding of autonomy systems, particularly sensors (LiDAR, camera, radar, IMU), localization techniques, and perception algorithms.
  • Proven hands-on experience in systems engineering for complex hardware/software systems.
  • Deep understanding of vehicle systems and their interaction with the autonomy stack.
  • Demonstrated experience working on safety-critical systems and applying safety standards like ISO 26262 or ISO 21448 (including activities like HARA, FMEA, FTA, safety concept development).
  • Experience with requirements definition, management (e.g., Jama ), architecture design, integration, and validation.
  • Ability to read code in C++ and write code in Python for analysis, tooling, and test automation.
  • Strong communication skills - both verbal and written.

Bonus Points

  • Experience developing safety cases or safety arguments (e.g., using GSN).
  • Experience with simulation environments and HIL testing for ADAS/AD systems.
  • Familiarity with other safety methodologies (e.g., STPA).
  • Experience working directly with hardware vendors on component selection and integration.
  • Experience with risk assessment methodologies and quantification.
