Overview

Microsoft's Substrate is a massively scaled service that forms the backbone of M365 offerings. Our services empower businesses, educational institutions, governments, and individuals worldwide, representing more than a billion users.


The Workload Management (WLM) team under M365 is responsible for managing execution of millions of background and system tasks for M365 and Copilot users. We are applying various technologies to maximize resource utilization while ensuing end user experiences are not impacted by keeping the giant system running in a stable and efficient way. We are driving continuous improvement towards integrated and intelligent automated operations.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will help plan, design, develop and test software systems or applications for software enhancements which may be used in local, networked, cloud-based, or Internet-related computer programs. This opportunity will allow you to develop software, AI/LLM tools and code to be used in support of design, infrastructure and technology platforms as well as commercial or end-user applications. You will use current programming language and technologies to write code, perform testing and debug any issues with robust documentation, procedures for deployment and processes for maintenance.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience with distributed systems and cloud services.
  • 1+ year(s) of experience identifying, analyzing, and resolving complex technical issues, ensuring optimal performance, scalability, and user experience.

Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a set of features.
  • Contributes to the identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product area with little oversight.
  • Creates and implements code for a product, service, or feature, reusing code as applicable.
  • Contributes to setup and run Experiments, evaluate results and impact and report.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) working on-call to monitor system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions and gains approval to restore system/product/service for simple problems.
