The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

The Center for Translational & Computational Neuroimmunology (CTCN), in the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) is a hub for large-scale translational human studies that integrate rigorous application of advanced laboratory techniques with cutting-edge computational methods. The CTCN includes a Neuroimmunology Core which specializes in the optimization and deployment of novel experimental platforms to support the projects of CTCN investigators and collaborators.
We are currently seeking a Research Assistant to join our research effort in the CNS tissue-based profiling. We are deploying traditional (immunohistochemistry/fluorescence, in situ hybridization) and emerging spatial transcriptomic technologies coupled to a robust image capture and semi-automated image segmentation pipeline to enable the large-scale projects that are currently funded.

Responsibilities

Histology Assays (80%)

  • Perform histology techniques, including sectioning of paraffin-embedded and frozen tissue using a microtome or cryostat.
  • Independently carry out large-scale tissue staining projects with high accuracy and consistency.
  • Apply established laboratory procedures and techniques relevant to histological analysis.
  • Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures and results; analyze and present findings to the research team.

Biobank Support (20%)

  • Process and prepare biospecimens (e.g., blood, serum, plasma, DNA, CSF) according to research protocols and ensure proper labeling and storage.
  • Coordinate and execute the shipment of biospecimens in compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines.
  • Enter and update data in relevant databases accurately; perform assigned quality assurance tasks to ensure timely and accurate data transmission.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least 1.5 years of related experience or equivalent in education, training, and experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with RNA and protein staining is strongly preferred
• Experience handling human clinical biopsies or animal tissues is preferred
• Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences or related scientific field required.
• 2-4 Years Related Work Experience preferred.
• Basic understanding of molecular biology and analytical techniques including PCR, RT-qPCR, molecular cloning, nucleic acid isolation and manipulation.
• Ability to learn new skills and knowledge on the job and productively deliver high-quality results
• Attention to detail and maintenance of good scientific records
• Excellent organizational and documentation skills
