This regular, full-time, administrative position will work Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, with flexible or extended hours during peak times, as needed by the College or department.

Position Summary
The Police Officer assists in operations and control daily of public safety management at five separate campus locations employing a blended force of three (3) sworn officers and 12 contract security guards to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff of the College and those of the institutional tenants. Responsible for enforcing all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances as well as develops, implements, and enforces institutional policies and procedures that ensure a safe, secure, and comfortable environment conducive to a quality educational experience. Responsible for the ensuring the timely reporting of all crimes, incidents, and injuries. Coordinates with local law enforcement entities for mutual aid support and exercises. Serves as the institutional on-scene representative during critical incidents.

Kellogg Community College is located in Battle Creek, Michigan, a community of approximately 54,000 people. Leisure activities, natural resources and learning opportunities provide a foundation for residents. Located along the I-94 interstate, Battle Creek is within 30 minutes of Kalamazoo, 60 minutes of Lansing and Grand Rapids and within three hours of Detroit, Chicago and Indianapolis.

Physical Demands
The job responsibilities are performed in office areas, presentation venues, and outside locations at various locations. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, running, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, dexterity (grasping, holding), lifting (some of which may be heavy or awkward (50+ pounds)). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration, including reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, tactile sensation for detection, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, talking, and smelling. Interaction includes contact with the general public and working alone. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some unpleasant situations.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Associates degree (AA, AS) or equivalent in Law Enforcement and Public Safety; Public Service Administration, obtained from an accredited college or university.
  2. Currently MCOLES certified or licensable as a police officer as defined by MCOLES at time of hire.
  3. One to three (1-3) years of law enforcement experience.
  4. Valid State of Michigan driver's license with an acceptable traffic record.
  5. Specific training in mental health awareness for public safety professionals and de-escalation must be completed within first year of employment and annually after that to remain employed.


Preferred but not Required
  1. Proficient with Microsoft Office or other similar software suite.
  2. Trained and certified in Title IX.
  3. Five to seven (5-7) years of law enforcement experience.


Proposed Salary
According to the Kellogg Community College Hay Administrative Compensation program, the 2025-2026 hourly rate range for a Professional 1 non-exempt position, $24.32 to $28.61 per hour to start.

Job Duties

Essential Function: Public Safety Operations

Description:
  • Assist in directing operations and planning for a wide range of public safety, public health, occupational and environmental health, fire safety, parking and traffic enforcement for all five campus locations to ensure the safety and security of the entire institutional community and major tenants of the College.
  • Respond to students and family members, as well as campus community's concerns on safety and security matters.
  • Conduct foot patrols, including searches of buildings, offices, and outdoor areas of variable terrains.
  • Maintain current training standards expected of sworn police officers, including but not limited to mental health awareness for public safety professionals and de-escalation techniques.

Essential Function: Public Safety Patrols

Description:
  • Patrols and monitors all KCC campuses for public safety.
  • Document criminal and certain non-criminal incidents that occur.
  • Respond to campus emergencies, assess situations, implement corrective action, and make appropriate notifications to college administration.

Essential Function: Managing Contract Security Guards

Description:
  • Assist in managing contract security guards to ensure adequate coverage for campus locations and at KCC-sponsored events.

Essential Function: Student Relations

Description:
  • Student relation duties, including assisting in student orientation with Public Safety themes.
  • Assist Director of Student Relations in dealing with student complaint issues, which can include assisting with the investigation of Title IX complaints.
  • Complete required annual training for mental health awareness for public safety professionals and de-escalation.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, tact, and respect, reinforcing positive public relations with stakeholders.

Essential Function: Background Checks, Eligibility, and Reports

Description:
  • Assist in completing background checks on students that are required by State Law.
  • Determine whether students are eligible to participate in academic clinical and interim educational programs at KCC.
