Overview

The Media Relations Manager crafts and amplifies compelling health care narratives that showcase Central Health's vital role in Travis County. Reporting to the Director of Content, this role bridges the gap between health care services and community awareness through strategic storytelling and media engagement. The Media Relations Manager spearheads the development of engaging narratives that highlight Central Health's impact on low-income communities and health care accessibility, designs and executes comprehensive media campaigns that educate Travis County residents about Central Health's health care planning, funding, and delivery systems, and transforms complex health care initiatives into accessible, human-centered stories that resonate with diverse audiences. This role requires daily contact with media outlets, detailed coordination of information sharing, and a keen understanding of how to generate positive news coverage for Central Health. This position works in an approved on-site Central Health location with the flexibility to work remotely one day a week as long as it doesn't interfere with business needs. Occasional work outside normal hours and on weekends might be required.

Responsibilities

Identify and develop authentic stories of community transformation, emphasizing the real impact of Central Health's programs.
Create compelling multimedia content for various platforms, including press releases, feature stories, social media, and digital communications, and manage the Central Health newsroom (CentralHealth.net).
Build and maintain strong relationships with local, state, and national media outlets to secure positive coverage.
The person in this role should have, or develop, trusted relationships with reporters covering Central Health and routinely pitch and place stories resulting in meaningful media coverage.
Analyze and understand complex issues, then write about them in approachable, understandable ways that resonate with the appropriate target audience.
Help ensure brand consistency across communications materials.
Help the community understand the value of supporting Central Health.
Lead the production of press kit materials for media outlets, including press releases, images, videos, pitch letters, case studies, feature articles, and trending stories.
Plan and produce press conferences, interviews, and other media and event opportunities.
Manage internal processes for providing media outlets access to Central Health staff and facilities, including arranging interviews, location shoots, providing quotes, or delivering assets.
Write and/or edit press releases, public statements, talking points, and speeches.
Track, evaluate, and share results of media relations efforts, monitoring media coverage and sharing it with staff, board, and elected officials.
Collaborate with the entire Communications team, including Content, Creative Services, Enagement, and Outreach, as well as other Central Health departments and staff.
Cooperate and collaborate with the entire Central Health system, as well as external partners, to shape the media narrative around our work, our programs, and our impact.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, or related communications degree  required.

 

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years Full-time professional experience either as a journalist in a media organization or working directly with journalists in media relations, public relations, or in-house communications roles.
    Required
    And
    5 years Demonstrated experience creating diverse content (including copy, press releases, fact sheets, and social media posts) for complex organizations in either the private or public sector. Required
    And
    5 years Must be proficient in utilizing multiple communications channels, including web, broadcast, print, and social media. Required
  • Preferred: 7 years Professional experience working either for a private, for-profit PR/communications agency or as an in-house communications professional for a public entity,
    nonprofit, or healthcare organization. 7 years Strong existing relationships with local and regional media.  Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred. 5 years Experience with media monitoring and contact management software, ie Agility Media, Meltwater, etc. 7 years Experience in health care communications
