About the job

About Ammobia
Ammobia is on a mission to revolutionize the ammonia industry. We are a seed-stage startup developing Haber Bosch 2.0 – a next-generation ammonia synthesis process enabling cost-effective, clean ammonia production. Our proprietary swing reactor system runs at 10x lower pressures and 4x higher conversions than the state of the art, enabling economical production at any plant scale or energy source.
Clean ammonia will support ammonia’s growing role in our decarbonized world, tackling some of the most difficult to abate sectors including chemicals, fertilizers, and heavy-duty transportation. We are supported and recognized by leading climate tech organizations including Starlight Ventures, the US Department of Energy, Collaborative Fund, Third Derivative, Forbes 30u30, and more.

Job Description
Ammobia is seeking a motivated and creative materials scientist intern to help with our materials development programs. You will work in our on-site lab, doing wet chemistry to synthesize our groundbreaking, novel reactor materials, and bring your own ideas to the table on how to measure and improve them. By supporting our scale-up and process development, you can help bring our technology from the lab to the field. You will work from concept through to application and break new ground in materials performance and optimization.

Successful applicants will have most of the following qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Synthesize, characterize, and test novel ammonia-related materials on our in-house reactor test systems
  • Develop and scale up materials production processes
  • Work with chemical engineers to develop experiments and review results of past experiments to determine material applicability
  • Review academic literature and industry research on catalyst development and other related materials
  • Present findings, make data-informed decisions on recipes and material compositions

Qualifications

  • Actively seeking a BS, MS, or PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field
  • Demonstrated hands on experience in chemical/materials science research labs, in particular those with a focus on catalyst development and/or chemical process scale-up
  • Working knowledge and experience in experimental materials science or chemical engineering related to powder and solid materials characterization and processing. Eg, characterization techniques (BET, TGA, SEM, XRD, elemental analysis, etc)
  • Working knowledge of programmatic data analysis, eg Python, Matlab
  • A passion for sustainability and excitement for working in a start-up environment
  • Previous internship experience in a related role

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience applying material development to catalysis, separations, energy storage, or similar
  • Experience with composite material manufacturing and characterization techniques
  • Experience in start-up environments
