Job Description:
Portledge School is seeking an enthusiastic and mission-aligned Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Coach to lead and support the development of student-athletes within its Upper School basketball program. The coach will work in partnership with the Varsity Head Coach and Athletics Department to prepare players for competition and potential advancement to the varsity level. The ideal candidate will bring a positive attitude, strong fundamentals, and a commitment to fostering a team culture rooted in Portledge’s Mission and Pillars: Kindness, Purpose, Honor, and Respect.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Design and implement practice plans that develop individual skills, team concepts, and sportsmanship.
- Create a positive, inclusive, and structured environment that supports personal and athletic growth.
- Teach and reinforce basketball fundamentals, strategy, and conditioning appropriate for JV-level players.
- Work closely with the Varsity Head Coach to ensure program alignment and consistency in player development.
- Serve as a mentor and role model to student-athletes, emphasizing teamwork, discipline, and respect.
- Maintain open and professional communication with players, parents, and school staff.
- Support logistics related to team travel, uniforms, and scheduling in coordination with the Athletics Department.
- Uphold all PSAA, NYSAIS, and NFHS regulations and guidelines.
- Attend all practices, games (home and away – traveling on the bus with the team)and program-related events.
- Assist with video review and player feedback as needed (experience with Hudl preferred).
Qualifications and Skills:
- Previous coaching experience, preferably at the middle school, JV, or varsity level.
- Strong understanding of basketball fundamentals and team-building strategies.
- Ability to inspire and connect with student-athletes of varying skill levels.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- High level of integrity and professionalism in representing the school and athletic program.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (in education, sports management, or a related field).
- Availability for evening and weekend commitments, including travel for away games.
- Experience with video analysis tools (e.g., Hudl) is a plus.
- Commitment to upholding the values of an independent school community.
Season:
Practice will start approximately around November 1, 2025 and end approximately around March 15, 2026.
