At Prairie Land Electric Cooperative, we’re on the lookout for an enthusiastic and dedicated  GIS Mapping Technician  who is eager to learn and contribute to our dynamic team. Utilize cutting-edge tools like Esri Arc Pro to create detailed circuit diagrams and system maps, enhancing your skills while working on impactful projects that support community growth.

The GIS Mapping Technician will support and maintain PLEC Electric’s Geographic Information System (GIS) by ensuring that the electric model, the associated database, connectivity, and background datasets are accurate and current using current GIS software and technology, both in the office and in the field.  This position will support both digital and hard-copy publishing for the GIS system, including the electric model and the upkeep of the outage management system. This includes being able to technically support the end users' mapping client and the maintenance/operation of department publishing equipment.  Duties include:

  • Collects, inputs, processes, and maintains geographic data in ArcGIS Pro
  • Processes and updates changes to reflect an accurate and current geographical representation of the electrical model to ensure an accurate and current representation of the electrical system.
  • Performs spatial analysis and geoprocessing using ArcGIS tools
  • Converts and manipulates GIS data formats (e.g., shapefiles, GeoJSON, KML)
  • Ensures data accuracy, consistency, and metadata documentation
  • Creates, updates, and formats maps, including layouts, symbology, and labeling, in ArcGIS Pro
  • Processes, integrates, and verifies field data and asset locations (e.g., power poles, substations, meters)
  • Assists other departments with GIS-related tasks and analysis
  • Engages in a wide range of responsibilities: data management, analysis, application support, automation, map production, and many other types of responsibilities related to GIS

Experience:

  • 2+ years prior experience in GIS minimum
  • Experience with power utilities is strongly preferred
  • Experience with ArcGIS

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro
  • Knowledge of geoprocessing tools and spatial analysis techniques
  • Ability to interpret construction plans, field data, and other geographic information
  • Strong spatial analysis skills for identifying patterns and relationships in geographic data
  • Critical thinking and attention to detail. Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Adaptability and a strong willingness to learn new technologies, tools, and methods to support evolving organizational needs
