About the job
About the Position
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Data Center Engineer to design, build, scale, and perform daily upkeep in our regional data and colocation centers. This is a hands-on position that will require a strong communicator with excellent people skills who can manage projects and take ownership.
You will join an interdisciplinary team made up of several groups across Jane Street, including our Network, Server, Facilities Engineering, Market Data, and Trading teams, along with some external data center operators, colocation and smart hands service providers, and cabling, hardware, and telco vendors. You will collaborate with these stakeholders to:
- Design plans for new equipment deployments using data center best practices
- Coordinate logistical tasks across locations, including procurement, shipping, moving, and keeping inventory of our equipment, cabling, and parts
- Install, cable, configure, and troubleshoot different types of network and server equipment
- Install and configure server OS in a PXE environment (fundamental Linux knowledge is required to deploy network equipment)
- Ensure all our data centers uphold the highest standards in terms of security, organization, documentation, safety, cleanliness, and supply management
You will provide on-location services that are crucial to our daily operations in New York, along with remote locations across the Americas. Due to the nature of the job, remote work is not an option and frequent travel between the data center and one of the colocation centers will be needed.
About You
- 5+ years of experience working in a data center environment with strong knowledge of data center best practices and cabling methodology
- Self-starter; motivated to work independently and improve processes where possible
- Knowledgeable in networking fundamentals; can address Layer 2 and 3 connectivity issues
- Proficient in a Linux environment (Scripting skills in Bash or Python are a plus)
- Experienced with a variety of server and network hardware (e.g., Dell, Cisco, Arista, Ciena, OTDR testing tools like EXFO and VIAVI)
- Can design, deploy, test, and troubleshoot both copper and fiber cabling
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders for equipment installation
- Willing to work occasional evening hours and weekends
- Fluency in English is required; ability to speak other languages is a plus (e.g., Spanish, Portuguese)
