The Barnard Art History Department invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Modern and Contemporary East Asian Art History which will begin July 1, 2026. Applicants must demonstrate a strong research profile and be able to contribute to the Barnard and Columbia curriculum on the art, architecture, and visual culture of East Asia at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Regardless of specific research area, candidates must be able to support undergraduate research in modern and contemporary art of all of East Asian art and to participate in Barnard’s undergraduate curriculum in art history more broadly. The position will also involve mentoring undergraduates, supervising senior theses, and contributing to the development of critical approaches to art history across both departments. Barnard is a premier liberal arts undergraduate college for women in New York City affiliated with Columbia University. Tenured and tenure-track faculty in Art History are also members of the graduate faculty of Columbia’s Department of Art History and Archaeology. The Department requires a Ph.D. in the History of Art or a related field at the time of appointment.
